Snaptoon is a client-commissioned project designed specifically as professional 3D software for creating webtoon backgrounds. The global webtoon market is rapidly expanding, reaching approximately USD 8.3 billion in 2023, and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.3% through 2030.
This rapid market growth underscores a clear need for specialized tools capable of delivering high-quality backgrounds efficiently. Recognizing the growth potential and aiming to lead with innovative technology in this expanding market, our company chose to engage in this project. Snaptoon was developed to provide creators with an intuitive solution, enabling them to effortlessly create diverse and professional visual effects without complicated processes.
Our company was responsible for the core tool development of Snaptoon, creating an intuitive and user-friendly UI based on Unreal Engine. We meticulously implemented a variety of lighting effects, post-processing effects, and camera effects to allow creators to effectively express their desired atmosphere and visual styles. Additionally, we built robust file saving and loading systems to simplify the management of created scenes, and incorporated Undo/Redo functionalities using the Command pattern to significantly enhance editing convenience.
Furthermore, we enabled the import of Runtime Datasmith and SketchUp (.skp) files, allowing creators to build backgrounds without incurring the high licensing costs typically associated with software like SketchUp. This significantly reduced both financial burden and complexity, empowering webtoon artists to freely explore their creativity and produce diverse backgrounds.
Through close collaboration with our client and structured project management, the Snaptoon project was successfully completed, providing a tailored 3D background creation tool that maximizes user convenience and creativity, thus greatly enhancing the efficiency of webtoon production.
